Samenvatting

The history of mobility research in the Netherlands is traced, & B. Vries's quantitative investigation of the social mobility of the Amsterdam elite in the second half of the nineteenth century (Electoraat en elite. Sociale structuur en sociale mobiliteit in Amsterdam 1850-1895 [The Electorate and the Elite. Social Structure and Social Mobility in Amsterdam 1850-1895], Amsterdam: De Bataafsche Leeuw, 1986) is outlined; her conclusion that the openness of the upper classes in Amsterdam increased during this period is contested. Vries's data are reexamined applying loglinear mobility models in which both tax & occupational data are analyzed across the variables of career & intergenerational mobility & social network. Occupation &/or tax as indicators of social position are discussed, & total & relative tax mobility are distinguished. Results show that total tax mobility increased as Vries reported, but relative tax mobility did not. Both total & relative occupational mobility measures indicate that the openness claimed by Vries did not take place. 10 Tables, 1 Appendix, 19 References. Z. Dubiel
