An empirical evaluation of the hypothesis that (post)materialist orientations influence voting behavior independently of other relevant variables. It is demonstrated that, in the Netherlands, the causal effect of postmaterialism is exceedingly weak. In addition, postmaterialism is shown to be dependent on ideological Left/Right orientations rather than being an independent & rivaling influence on political choice. Also, it appears to be linked differently to social position than most theories postulate. 1 Table, 3 Figures, 32 References. Modified HA
