Samenvatting

One of the well-established facts of social stratification research is a strong correlation between occupational prestige, on the one hand, & education & income, on the other. More recently, research has been done on the relation between occupational prestige & gender. In most cases, the effects of education, income, & gender on occupational prestige are taken for granted. Here, however, a research design manipulating income, education, & gender has been used with 2 random samples in the Netherlands (total N = 100). Both groups were asked to rate 30 occupations according to their place on the social ladder & were given additional information on the education required for each occupation, expected income, & gender of its practitioners. The results show an important effect for income, a statistically significant contribution of education, & no contribution of gender. 4 Tables, 1 Figure, 18 References. Modified HA
