Samenvatting
Max Weber's sociological conception of ewiger Kampf (eternal struggle) -- ie, the idea of conflict as an inevitable condition of man -- is examined. Its legitimation in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft ([Economy and Society], Tubingen, 1972) is considered unsatisfactory. Weber's approach is compared with an alternative conception by Rene Girard (Mensonge romantique et verite romanesque [Romantic Lies and Romanesque Truth], Pluriel, 1968; La violence at le sacre [Violence and the Sacred], Paris, 1972; & Des choses cachees depuis la fondation du monde [Things That Have Been Hidden since the Foundation of the World], Paris, 1978). Girard criticizes Weber for thinking too romantically about man. This is why Weber's arguments about the inevitability of strife fail to convince. 4 References. Modified HA
