Samenvatting
Researchers frequently include both positively & negatively formulated items in a battery of questions (eg, items constituting a Likert-type scale, or a series of semantic differentials), on the assumption that this will keep Rs alert. The effect of such assumptions is examined in a LISREL analysis. An example with real data shows that this type of trivial assumption can turn the scale in favor of a theoretical model that is subjected to a test, in the sense that the model would be rejected without those assumptions. 4 Tables, 1 Figure.
