A report on the study "Differentiatie in sociaal- en geesteswetenschappelijk onderzoek: een studie naar het denken over en het beleid ten aanzien van 'versnippering', met bijzondere aandacht voor de demografie, de taalwetenschap en de sociale en economische geschiedenis" ([Differentiation in Social Science and Humanities Research: A Study on the Thought on and Policy of 'Fragmentation', with Special Attention Given to Demography, Linguistics, and Social and Economic History], The Hague: Netherlands State Publishing House, 1984). The study presents an approach for distinguishing & evaluating phenomena of differentiation in the social sciences & the humanities. Criticisms are made about the use of the "care of knowledge" concept as a tool for distinguishing between functional & dysfunctional differentiation.
