Variations in interviewer style or behavior may affect the results of social scientific research. Such effects are examined through analysis of findings from a Dutch research project in which 6 interviewers adopted 3 distinct styles of interviewing: formal, empathic, & intimate. Formal styles tend to produce less full answers to questions; on the other hand, intimate styles bias Rs toward agreeing with the interviewer's sentiments. While some rapport is desirable, a certain degree of formality may be preferable to maximum rapport. 7 Tables. Modified HA
