According to P. E. J. Buiks ("Aantekening: etnisch reveil onder Surinaamse jongeren in Nederland" [Notes. Ethnic Consciousness among Surinamese Youth in the Netherlands], Beleid en Maatschappij, 1983, 10, 5), different marginal groups form among Surinamese youth in the Netherlands because of structural rejection, which leads to a revival of ethnic consciousness. The degree to which this explanation also applies to Moroccan youth is examined. The process of marginalization for Moroccan youth in Amsterdam is described on the basis of three typical life histories. The results show, contrary to Buik's findings, that frustration & ethnicity are not the structural conditions for development of a marginal lifestyle among Moroccan youth, & that ingegrated rather than marginal boys are more likely to promote their ethnicity. The marginal lack the social skills, ideology, & symbols to express their ethnic consciousness. 20 References. Modified HA
