The social sciences have too often attempted to imitate the natural sciences, seeking public recognition both of the scientific character of their procedures & of the professional competence of interventions based on them. Social planning as a concept illustrates this imitation. The history of this concept in Dutch sociology is traced from the 1920s to the present, focusing on the different forms it has taken. Both technocratic social planning & piecemeal social engineering have by now been undermined. Modified HA
