Samenvatting

Max Weber's study of the military-sociological aspects of ancient Judaism (Gesammelte Aufsatze zur Religionssoziologie, [Selected Essays on the Sociology of Religion: Ancient Judaism], Tubingen, 1963 [1917-1919]) is summarized. Weber shows how a process of demilitarization stimulated by an increasing expense of weapon technology occurred in old Israelite society. Concurrent with the centralization of administration & military power under the kingdom of Israel, a growing part of the population was demilitarized & socially declasse. Weber argued that the religion of Jahwism was connected with these groups in a situation of powerlessness. His interpretation of this religion was developed in a critical dialogue with Karl Marx & Friedrich Nietzsche. 43 References. Modified HA
