Samenvatting
An examination of whether a theoretically based conceptualization of friends is in accord with what individuals report about their friends. Interview data from Dutch adults aged 30-40 & 65-75 (totalN = 63) reveal that characteristics generally assigned to friends also apply to other types of personal relationships, eg, romantic partners & relatives. Thus, there appears to be a distinction between the concept of "friend," which is a category label, & the concept of "friendship," which applies to the equality of a relationship. Caution is suggested in the use of the label attached to a relationship as the sole indicator of the particular quality of that relationship. 2 Tables, 15 References. Modified HA
