It is argued that A. de Swaan's Zorg en de staat; welzijn, onderwijs en gezondheidszorg in Europa en de Vereinigde Staten in de nieuwe tijd ([Care and the State: Welfare, Education, and Health Care in Modern Europe and the United States] Amsterdam: Bert Bakker, 1989), in which he attempts to synthesize historical sociology with welfare economics, thereby avoiding an ecclectic approach, is only partially successful. 13 References.
