It is argued that postmaterialism plays an important role in voting behavior in the Netherlands. Analysis of data from various Dutch Parliamentary Election Studies reveals that during the economic recession 1977-1986, socioeconomic Left-Right views more accurately predicted voting behavior than did sociocultural libertarian-authoritarian views. The scarcity hypothesis explains this finding, identifying a tendency toward materialistic voting as a consequence of economic decline. Further analyses reject the socialization hypothesis. 2 Tables, 1 Figure, 14 References. Modified AA
