Some reasons for the rise of interest in military sociology, some areas of interest in it, & an introduction to a number of articles on the subject

This issue contains a selection of 40 papers which were presented at a conference on "The Perceived Role of the Military" in France in Sep, 1970. In a situation in which there is an ever growing relationship between the military & pol'al thought, an undermining of the traditional ideas of the civilian control of the army & a growing tendency towards a professional army, it becomes clear that the interest in military sociol will grow. The articles by M. D. Feld, R. D. McKinley, R. Kroes, M. Lissate, & R. Nauta were selected because they focus specifically on the relationship between the army & society. Respectively, a comparison of the military profession with other traditional professions, the influence of the professionalization of the army on the civilian-military relationship & pol'al thinking in the army, the association of some specific groups within the Dutch army & some pol'ly right-wing groups during the "pol'al actions" against the Indonesian decolonization movement, the role of the army in Israeli society, & the dualism between the images of military action in society & in the army are presented.
