Sociology in the Netherlands: Problems and Opportunities

Nat'l & local diff'iation is characteristic of sociol. Dutch sociol is discussed as a nat'l specialty, & as a part of the worldwide discipline, based on observations made while the author was a visiting professor at the Sociol'al Instit of Utrecht. Dutch sociol is characterized by: (1) a high rating on the ladder of academic respectability; (2) excellent resources in men, instit's & equipment; (3) easy input from the global literature, due to the multilingual reading abilities of the Dutch scholar, but low output due to lack of translation; (4) personal & soc responsibility to the established order. Future contributions of Dutch sociol to the parent discipline might include: (1) analytical sociography-sociol'al theorizing about large-scale, unique historical phenomena, with the aid of statistical data & computers; (2) replication of signif studies made in other modern societies that are less amenable to controlled observation than the Netherlands; (3) the circulation of Dutch res findings in other languages.
