The sociol of music must be based on a philosophical understanding of art; S. Langer & M. Dufrenne are cited. It is felt that art is a peculiar 'symbolic system' & hence a means of interpreting our subjective human reality. The adequate perception of music requires that the listener direct his attention to the musical forms that are presented to him, not to what he expects to be 'behind' these tonal structures. 'Popular' music, the greater part of all produced music commands the interest of the sociol of music no less than 'serious' music. The functioning of both types of music in our modern society is discussed by citing the writings of T. W. Adorno. Modified AA.
