SOCIAL STATUS, OF THE COMPOSER IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOCIETIES,

The SS of the composer in diff types of societies & the effects of his role obligations on his artistic production are investigated. The position of the composer working under patronage is contrasted with the contemporary 'free' composer. Using the concept 'soc control', it is shown that a considerable shift in pressure on the composer has taken place; at present, due to the fact that most composers are not integrated in the society & hence do not write their music for a specific occasion, the composer is almost entirely free of soc control. For the contemporary composer, the only 'signif others' are his colleagues. This situation is highly favorable to musical experiments which increase the gap between the composer & the public because the public cannot keep up with a rapid musical development.
