A prestige-hierarchy of 16 Sch branches, taught at HSch's, is presented. The hierarchy was brought about by 4 groups of HSch teachers: (1) exact group; (2) language group; (3) physical teachers group; & (4) others group. A mail questionaire was used. In this way 4 ordinal scales in which the Sch branches according to soc prestige were arranged. The rank r between the scales was high (rs=+ 0.96). The hypothesis that the place of the physical teacher in this hierarchy is low was confirmed (in every scale the 14th place). There is no diff in appreciation for the physical educ between the diff religious groups of the sample. 4 essential causes of the relatively low soc prestige of the physical teacher are given: (A) the Dutchman overvalues the intellectual activities & undervalues the physical activities; (B) though physical educ & sports are important for the mental & physical health of the people, the society asks for brains; (C) physical examination is not a subject of examination; & (D) physical educ is more recreative than creative.
