A description of the ideological causes of the rise, & the structural conditions of the scope & limits of a sociol of work. Its 'lack of an unique identity', as stated by T. Caplow, is not only a matter of historical development of sci's, but deals with a more interesting problem: the internal structure of elements of sociol'al knowledge re 'work' & 'occup'. The sociol of work is a vertical specialism by its very object, but a horizontal specialism by its comparative approach to this object. It consists of a heterogeneous, inconsistent number of diff sociol'al approaches to some aspects of work. For that reason, efforts to identify the sociol of work with a sociol'al study of the labormarket, job-satisfaction, etc, are invalid from a sci'fic point of view. AA.
