Samenvatting

A reply to a critique by F. Van Heek (see SA 1837-B2130) of a study by E. W. Hofstee (See SA 1837-B2107). Hofstee has shifted the emphasis of the problem when dealing with the birth level rather than its actual decline. Exception is taken to Van Heek's assumption that there is a typically Catholic pattern of birth rate. Actually, the Catholic pattern & the non-Catholic pattern are considered quite similar. Rather, other regional factors must be considered, such as the emergence of certain cultural patterns. However, it is agreed with Van Heek that this process is still in progress, & that for the moment no final evaluation can be made. (See SA 1837-B2131). A. Chapman.
