The interests which the cafe (CF) (a generic term denoting any public place serving liquor in Holland) holds for the sociol'st is in indirect proportion to the limited studies in existence on this subject. In a leisure-time study conducted in 1955-1956, it was found that the mean/average time spent in CF's was dependent on many factors, such as geographical distribution & religion, & that it was mainly a recreation of the Wc. Historically, the CF provided a neutral atmosphere in which to conduct business affairs, though this is less the case today. Many pol'al org's, as well as crime & prostitution, were also linked with the CF. Diff types of CF's fulfill diff needs. Prolonged interviewing & observation in Haarlem (1961), revealed: (1) the neighborhood CF, catering to the immediate vicinity & generating a friendly atmosphere; (2) 'category' CF's, catering to more limited groups, such as students; & (3) transient CF's. Though today TV presents an enormous threat to the continued welfare of the CF, this instit plays a sufficiently vital role in the life of the average person to warrant additional sociol'al analysis.
