Samenvatting

The rising emphasis on educ for Belgium's gifted youth is illustrated by concrete measures taken: (1) the law of Mar 1954, creating a Nat'l Study Fund, & (2) 3 laws of Aug 1960, providing for U subsidization. The rapid increase of students in the post-war era is due not to a parallel increase in the student age group, but rather to increased SM, & to the greater availability of scholarships. Re choice of areas of study, a rapid increase in Literature, Sci, Psychol, & Educ, with a view to teaching, & a decrease of interest in such fields as law & medicine, illustrate the `safe road' attitude created by the student's more limited awareness of the professions open to him. Of the total/sum student pop, 60% is French-speaking. Some reasons for the generally higher participation of the French culture group are: (A) Dutch participation in secondary Sch educ is less; (B) many professors are French-oriented; (C) there is a high concentration of the academic milieu in the French-speaking provinces; & (D) U's tend to recruit local students. A study conducted by the U of Louvain in 1959-1960 revealed that Dutch students generally rank lower in the soc hierarchy. In order to equalize the participation of both culture groups, it is essential to stimulate the talents of those in the Lc 's. A. Chapman.
