Samenvatting

Despite the enormous expenditures of resources required to conduct international comparative studies, interest in European integration led to a comparative component in the Dutch government's biannual Sociaal en Cultureel Rapport 1990 ([Social and Cultural Report 1990] Rijswijk/Den Haag: Sociaal & Cultureel Planbureau/VUGA, 1990). Overall indicators show that the Netherlands is on the same socioeconomic level as neighboring Western European countries. However, some differences are found with respect to the demographic composition of the population, % engaged in the labor force, & crime rates, with the Netherlands' rate exceeding the European average.
