Samenvatting

A review of essays & other texts by Tonko Tjarko ten Have (1906-1975), the "founding father" of the academic study of the so-called agogic sciences or andragology in the Netherlands. Historical & metatheoretical analysis of the stipulative definitions ten Have proposed & of his rather implicit philosophy of social sciences reveals the conceptual framework of ten Have's theorizing is poor. Further, debates between him & others are deficient because of incompatible linguistic criteria & philosophical & scientific assumptions. Ten Have wrote within the tradition of psychic monism, established by Dutch philosopher & psychologist Gerard Heymans, & it is presumed that neither ten Have nor his andragological colleagues were aware of the idealistic characteristics of Heymans' epistemology & methodology, a fact that obscures their controversies. In addition, ten Have was epistemologically naive, eg, he was not familiar with the arguments of the hermeneutic tradition about the impossibility of universal judgements in the realm of human sciences. It is argued that this epistemological naivete weakens his conception of andragology. Modified AA
