This paper provides a fascinating insight into the history of residential care in Poland, celebrating the famous people who have contributed to the development of services for children and identifying the paradigm shifts that have taken place over time. The current situation is described, together with issues and dilemmas. A focus of the paper is on new projects designed to involve the local community while addressing the needs of children and families. Such projects include networks of linked children's centres, rooted in the Warsaw children's communities of the 1920s but now financed by local government and offering a variety of flexible services.
