Samenvatting

In the second half of the nineteenth century there was an outburst of genealogical fervor in Europe. As a result, social registers appeared in many countries. Studied is the practice of genealogy in the Netherlands & the genesis of the Nederland's Adelsboek (Dutch Nobility Book) & the Nederland's Patriciaat (Dutch Patricians) as leading social registers. This genealogical activity is seen primarily as a means to mark status boundaries. As such, it gave rise to difficulties & controversies; these are shown by analyzing the way the genealogical establishment tried to fix the status of patricians from the end of the nineteenth century to the present.
