Samenvatting

In the 1960s & 1970s, the Dutch Railway Co responded to the increasing popularity of private transportation by taking measures to ensure its accessibility to the public. In the early 1970s, the concept of the Family Railway -- in which travelers & guards were to form a community where many kinds of behavior are tolerated -- was advocated; however, a dark side of this tolerance emerged in the form of aggression, vandalism, & fraud. The image of the Family Railway was shattered & people demanded stricter social control & greater formalization. How these contradictory trends are to be explained remains to be seen. 6 References.
