Samenvatting

Introduces a special journal issue dedicated to the unexpectedly successful Belgian protest movement that evolved in 1996 in reaction to the government's inadequate handling of the Dutroux child murder case. The White movement, which found its highlight in the Brussels White March of 20 Oct 1996, defied all traditional mass mobilization & social movement theories; the number of participants was uncommonly high, & no formal organizing body existed. Contributors consider three questions: (1) What was the nature of the dissatisfaction with the state that underlay the protests? (2) How was the enormous mobilization accomplished? (3) What were the effects on society in general & the functioning of democracy in particular? 8 References. S. Paul
