Samenvatting

'The Theologian Is Set Apart.' Divinity Students in Nineteenth-Century Undergraduate Life. A historical sketch shows that, from the Reformation to the 18th century, Dutch theology students were kept largely segregated from university students of other disciplines, who were thought to be unruly. After the Napoleonic Wars, theology students began taking classes with students of jurisprudence and other fields and many joined fraternal organizations. Although, in general, the theology students were from poorer families, they shared the cultural capital of the wealthier law students. Many works of Dutch literature from this period had aspiring ministers as their protagonists. After 1870, however, a division reappeared between intellectuals and the clergy, and theology students were once again left to themselves. Excerpts from student diaries illustrate these events. 3 Tables, 2 Figures, 1 Graph, 109 References. Adapted from the source document.
