Samenvatting

"You Don't Go In with a Bunch of Flowers". Violence, Rationality and Professionalism in Armed Robberies. Data from interviews with 43 convicted robbers in 5 Dutch prisons regarding their perceptions of violence committed during robberies were analyzed using a rational choice perspective on criminal behavior (ie, crime as work). Robbers, unlike many criminologists and jurists, do not include threat of force within their definition of violence, and differentiate between meaningful and senseless force. The robbers' adherence to the norm that senseless violence is to be avoided restricts their actual use of physical force. Their decision-making processes concerning violence are described, and three types of robbers distinguished on the basis of motive (commercial vs other), readiness to use force or response to resistance, and professionalism. 5 Tables, 16 References.
