Street Robbery as a Form of Violent Theft. The dramatic increase in street robberies and their increasingly violent character have become a cause for concern in the Netherlands. Analysis of statistical data and police reports reveal that perpetrators are often young and belong to ethnic minorities. This has enhanced public fear of certain groups. However, further analyses of type of theft, modus operandi, and type of weapon show that the actual risks of victimization are smaller than perceived. Victimization in street robbery depends on sex, age, mobility, and neighborhood. A more sophisticated risk analysis is clearly needed to provide the public with realistic information about street robbery and selective patterns of victimization. 1 Figure, 27 References.
