Samenvatting

Landlords: Portrait of a Popular Public Figure of around 1900. In novels and political cartoons around 1900, Dutch landlords were inevitably portrayed as powerful and ruthless. As a result, in the social sciences, they have been viewed as opportunists who profited from rapid urban growth during the late nineteenth century, enriching themselves by collecting exorbitant rents and shirking maintenance. However, their position was substantially weakened by housing laws and policies introduced in 1901. A survey of both secondary literature and contemporary periodicals reveals a contradiction between the supposed power of the landlords and their inability to resist reformist housing policies. 3 Illustrations, 31 References.
