Samenvatting
In the nineties, the level of participation in sports and physical activities by Dutch teenagers and young adults became a subject of growing political concern. Policy-makers started various projects aimed at increasing youngsters' levels of physical activity. This article addresses the question of whether there has been a decrease in participation in sports and physical activities by young people in the 12-29 year age group. Within this framework, data of the national Time Budget Survey are analyzed, covering the period 1975-1995. No indication is found that, during the last few decades, young people have abandoned sport at an earlier age (i.e. 14-15), nor has the level of physical activities declined. Sport-participation even proves to have increased during the observed period.
