Samenvatting

At present, the social sciences have only fragmented empirical research describing the survey interview, & lack a full-grown theory on this subject. Role & behavior theories have been advanced, but are criticized for being too normative, narrow, & atomistic. A contextual approach is suggested in which attention is placed on the actual conversation occurring in the survey interview & how it is influenced by the social situation of the R, the surrounding society & culture, & the created structure of the interview situation. A model describing this relationship is developed, & suggestions for further research are offered. In Uitwerking en beoordeling van een contextuele theorie van het interview (Elaboration and Evaluation of a Contextual Theory of the Interview), J. van der Zouwen (Vrije U, Amsterdam, the Netherlands) translates these theoretical notions into a set of equations that represent the main variables of this model, then compares it to other attempts to model the cognitive & interactional processes that characterize interviews. It is concluded that the model as a whole is untestable; however, parts of it, or rather, predictions derived from it, can be tested using data from research on interviewing. Thus, while the theory is evaluated positively, its transformation into an empirically tenable model requires additional research. 1 Figure, 38 References. Modified HA
